Summer Camp 2012

Reporting from camp – a local Scout writes …

Corf campsite near Shalfleet on the Isle of Wight was the destination for the 3rd Winchester (The Worthies) Scout troop this year. 11 year old Charlie Blaxland describes what it was like.

IOW Aug 12_1AThis was my first experience of camp and it was awesome. Everyone was excited as we travelled on the ferry from Southampton – 7 scouts and 3 leaders off on a week long adventure! Our first job on arriving at Corf Scout camp was to unload the car and pitch the tents, gather wood for the fire and argue over who shared which tent! The campsite was huge with Scouts and Guides from other troops across the country and in a great location, next to Newtown creek and Corf lake. Over the week we had fun kayaking – most of us capsized a few times, sometimes deliberately so we could mess around in the water!

…Scouts Win This Battle…

One of my real highlights was fossil hunting. The Isle of Wight is known as dinosaur isle and has loads of prehistoric remains. We explored a beach with a Guide who told us the history of the area and helped us find fossils. I now have a collection of fossilised wood which I have proudly shown my friends! During the week, we visited Carisbrooke Castle, exploring the ancient building and watching a mock sword fight in the grounds. We enjoyed a nice long hike where I was pleased to see the famous island red squirrel and birds of prey. But some of us needed a little help from the leader’s car to finish the journey!

Another highlight was bat hunting. An expert took us on a night adventure with bat detectors to listen to signs of activity. We heard long eared bats and were treated to an amazing display of glow worms.

In the camp we all took turns to cook on the open fire – my specialities were pancakes and pot noodle! We played games, enjoyed sitting around the camp fire and meeting other scouts. We even made our own shelters one night. Camp was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait for next year. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Robin and Christine and Colin for looking after us so well and giving up their time so we could have a wonderful camp.
